The Young Silk-Road Sustainability Watchers guided by the Nobel Laureate Professor Adam Fenech
Join “Silk Road Climate Futures” – A Cross-Country Climate Research Project for Students
Countries across the Silk Road region are already feeling the impacts of climate change: hotter summers, shifting rains, longer growing seasons, more extreme events. Yet in many places, detailed, country-level climate impact assessments are still missing. The Silk Road Climate Futures project changes that by bringing together students and researchers from Silk Road University Network (SUN) institutions to build a comparable, multi-country picture of past and future climate change and its impacts.
As a student participant, you will work with real climate data and models to help produce a scientific paper for your own country, plus contribute to a larger synthesis paper comparing results across all SUN members.
What will it cost?
Nothing.
There are no fees to join the project, access the training materials, or take part in the research. Your main investment is your time, curiosity, and commitment to complete the tasks.
What will I get?
By the end of the project, active student participants can expect: (i) authorship on a peer-reviewed scientific paper for their country (with proper contribution) (ii) A suite of micro-credentials (digital badges/certificates) in Climate data analysis; future climate modelling; climate change impact assessment using a structured framework approved by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change; and writing a scientific research paper (figures, tables, methods, and discussion); and (iii) hands-on experience that strengthens applications for graduate school, scholarships, and research jobs in climate, environment, and policy.
Who can participate?
Undergraduates, MSc and PhD students from SUN member universities. Students from disciplines such as climate science, geography, environmental science, engineering, data science, economics, health, or related fields are especially welcome. You don’t need to be an expert already – the project includes guided training and mentored paper development.
How do I participate?
Getting involved is simple:
👉 Just email the project lead: adam.fenech@cud.ac.ae (cc:secretariat@sun0822.org)
Include your name, university, program, and a short note about why you’re interested.
The deadline for applications is May 31st.
You’ll be given more information about the project, the training schedule, and next steps. Join us to help build the first harmonized climate impact evidence base across the Silk Road region—while building your own skills, credentials, and publication record.
